Writing

Since childhood, I have always been passionate about writing – not just creative writing in the form of letters, stories and poems, but also in documenting my experiences. I particularly enjoy writing about places we have visited, both in the Western Cape as well as further afield, in Namibia, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Writing on my first blog (Grains of Sand) motivated me to self-publish a book I had written about a visit to the Garden Route, Gold Mines, Elephants and Foefie Slides: An Adventurous Weekend on the Garden Route (May 2009) (more information here).

In recent years, I have written numerous articles for publication on the web and in magazines, including the Reserve Force Volunteer, the Reserve Force Division website, the SKA South Africa Newsletter, the Pinelands Muse, the Equestrian Express, the Cape Town Rifles’ (Dukes) Communique, and the Military Despatches.

In 2012, I attended a Feature Writing course with GetSmarter, in conjunction with the University of Cape Town, in order to become more proficient and better at writing for publication. Our head tutor was the professional and award-winning writer André Wiesner.

My book

Gold mines, elephants and foefie slides: An adventurous weekend on the Garden Route. Tuffy-Cat Press, May 2009. It is the story of a long weekend we spent on South Africa’s lovely Garden Route during May 2008. We stayed in an adorable timber cabin in the forests of Rheenendal, flew through the canopy of the Tsitsikamma forest on a foefie slide, walked trunk-in-hand with magnificent elephants at The Crags, and hiked around some of the abandoned gold mines at Millwood. And, as we discovered, there is so much more to explore and experience in this extraordinarily beautiful region of South Africa! (More information here).
