On Thursday, 5 November 2020, a bronze bust of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin – first man in space – was unveiled at the SANSA Space Science Centre in Hermanus.

The ceremony had been organized with the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Cape Town. Due to the covid-19 lockdown restrictions, only a small group of guests were allowed to attend the unveiling ceremony.

The memorial to Gagarin bears the following inscription:

“Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it. – Y. Gagarin.”
